WHAT IS A MALA?

 

A mala is easy to use, and can be worn by anyone. People have used them for centuries as a tool to help focus the mind during meditation, mantras, or prayer. Others wear them as a beautiful piece of jewelry for the believed healing properties of the stones themselves, or as a simple way to remind them of their intentions, affirmations, or goals. 

A good beginning practice that anyone can do with a mala, is to take a long deep breath with each bead. The idea is to slow down, give yourself a break, and learn to be present and peaceful in the moment.

Fat Baby Malas is a tiny one woman shop that I started in 2014.

Every item sold is handmade by me, Jill Barry, using genuine, natural gemstones, sacred wood, and rudraksha seeds. Unless part of a stated collection, only one of each design is made. I like the idea that each mala that I've made is special for only one person.  

As a ritual, each mala is knotted from start to finish in one sitting to keep a continuous flow of energy throughout the mala. As each knot is tightened, the mantra “OM SHANTI OM” is recited, and my hope is that the positive, peaceful, energy put into the mala, will be felt by its owner every time they use it. All spacer beads are sterling silver and each mala is infused with reiki before being placed in it's box.
